Don’t fall for it!
First, don’t respond to spam emails no matter what, if they are a spammer they probably are a scammer. If you signed up for something and then get their email, that may be a different story.
Second, you can’t always deliver on the promise unless you are willing to go blackhat and use techniques that will get a high position for a time and then when Google finds out your site is banned or delisted completely. If this is your path, you might want to use generic domain names that you can throw away when you are done with it.
We took on the SEO for CDS Publications and did tell them we should have a number of top 10 positions after a month and more after two months. So far this is what they are seeing. Even with an older domain with PR3 and nothing coming up in the top 150, you can’t make a promise. Some of the terms are highly competitive and those take more time, others that are specific or have their business name in should be possible in a short amount of time after optimization and proper linking.
So, to recap, be careful with companies that make you huge promises in the area of SEO! Do some research on their company name to see what kinds of complaints are found, don’t let this dissuade you alone since almost every company will have something negative written about them, but find out how they handled the complaints or how many of the same complaint you find.
