It hasn’t even been one full day and Google shows 69 results for Sulumits Retsambew. It cracks me up to see the junk sites that are involved. They may rank, but those sites are the ones you hate getting on. Filled with blinking banners and pop-ups (ha ha – blocked!) I think of the amateur builders from the 90’s.

Those attempting to rank for “sulumits retsambew” without using popular social media sites are not as highly listed as those who are. Mike Dammann used digg to get a head start, but was taken over by the .org site showing that Google still gives more weight to the domain name having the keywords in it. Mike’s site Firetown is showing #9 right now for this Sulumits Retsambew page.

The .net owner thought he could get creative and claim that it is his name on a comment sent to this blog. I am guessing he wanted a link and try to stir up link bait by controversy. It might have worked if he applied for a name change…

Of course these domain name were taken very quickly:

www.sulumitsretsambew.com
www.sulumitsretsambew.net
www.sulumitsretsambew.org
www.sulumitsretsambew.biz

If you are still interested in joining the contest get over to www.netbuilders.org (see previous post for more info.)

What is sulumits retsambew?

It is for an SEO contest brought on by www.NetBuilders.org (a new, but good webmaster forum.) The two made up words are actually just “webmaster stimulus” spelled backwards.  The rules for this SEO contest can be found here sulumits retsambew

If you want to test out your skills in SEO head on over to NetBuilders.org and read more about it and get your website or pages ready to compete. The prizes are decent and the contest ends August 15th.

As you can see the keywords are not recognized English words so the competition will be amongst those competing. I would recommend anyone in SEO to at least experiment with this competition. Try a page only with outbound related links, try a site with just the title tags and description with one inbound link with the keywords as the anchor text. Maybe just make a page and get only directory links pointing to it to see the value those links may have. So even if you are not “competing” use this for a learning activity.

Maybe to keep track of the players I will post the sites on this blog that are competing and the top 3 of the week. See what works fast and what works long term.

So get your sulumits retsambew now! Or should I say get your webmaster stimulus now? Well, either way the first place winner (on Google) will get $1000 from NetBuilders.org!

Search engine optimization covers two major areas – On-page and off-page. Off-page optimization can also be covered in search engine marketing.

On page optimization encompasses the page items that would give the search engines the information needed to determine what the page is about. This is were you need to figure out the keyword or phrase that will be targeted for the page. Remember, each page can and should be optimized for different keyword phrases, so don’t try to make your homepage fit every keyword  phrase you are trying to rank for.

The major on-page items are meta-tags such as title and description and content tags such as headers (h1,h2,..), font options such as strong or bold, keyword placement and density. Important items such as on page anchor text for related pages or sites give the page strength or authority.

Off-page optimization can be everything from proper incoming anchor text and links, articles, press-releases, forum links, directory listings, social media sites, auction sites, and more. These items are not always under your control and are not all equal.

For years now people I know locally are always asking about our Internet business and many want to know how to get started. Some have businesses already that they want to use the Internet for marketing and others just wanted to start their own business and don’t know what to do.

While I have been preparing for the SEO workshop, I started thinking about how many people won’t need that workshop until they get a business going or are ready to build their website. So, I figured I would start asking around to see what the demand would be for a half day workshop on Starting an Internet Business.

So if you or someone you know would be interested send us an e-mail and we will see what the numbers would be like and plan a workshop for that.

If you are brand new to SEO, here are some basics to start out with. If you implement the items on this list to  your website, it will make your site more search engine friendly. This list covers on-page optimization only and is just the beginning. Keep in mind every page of your site needs to be optimized for a keyword or phrase separately.

1. Title of your page – Use the keyword or keyword phrase* as the title in most cases. This phrase should also be on the page within the content to match the title.  You will find this in your html as the Title tags: <title>Basic SEO Lesson</title>

2. Description tag – Some search engines ignore this, but you will still find some read it or use it within SERPS*.  The description should be a short  <meta name=”description” content=”Learn how to optimize your website with this basic SEO lesson. Your first steps for on page optimization.”>

3. Keyword tag – These days it seems most search engines ignore this once overused meta-tag. You still may want to put in a few keywords or KWP (maybe 3 or 4) in this tag. Again, make sure they fit the page. <meta name=”keywords” content=”SEO, SEO lesson, search engine optimization”>

4. Content – Now this is where you write about the subject. Carefully using the keyword or phrase throughout the content without making it read like it was an SEO company who wrote it all. Search engine optimization should be implemented in a way that leaves the content read naturally by the visitor, yet attract the search engines to the phrase you are targeting for that page.

5. File name – Your file name and folder name matters! Use the keyword or phrase within either or both when possible. Do not use spaces or underscores for these names, you can use a dash – to break up words for readability. Such as http://www.airevilo.com/medford-sem-workshop.htm

6. Linking – Link to other pages within your site using the keyword or phrase as the anchor text*. This will let the search engines know what that page is going to be about. An example of an anchor text would be Medford SEO workshop - as you can see that links to a page that is about the subject mentioned in the anchor text.

Definitions for words used above.

keyword phrase – a serious of 2 or more words that make up a phrase that describes what the subject is and it what you are targeting searches with.  KWP for short.

SERPS – Search Engine Results Pages – see SERPS on Wikipedia

Anchor Text – The word or words used to click on a hyperlink. These are the visible words rather than just a web address.
